Philosophy Statement:
Language is a gift of God to help us communicate and build relationships with one another. Language aptitude and experience can contribute to our usefulness in God’s service. Obedience to the commands of the Lord requires going to people of all languages.
Course Objective
In Spanish I students will learn basic vocabulary and grammar in context. (ESLR:ET) Using this vocabulary, students will be able to carry on a simple conversation in Spanish and read and write in complete sentences. (ESLR: DC) Creating posters and writing stories are important aspects done in each unit.(ESLR: DC, NLL) They learn Bible verses and Christian vocabulary. (ESLR: RUC) Through different readings about people and places from Latin America and Spain, students will develop an awareness of the Hispanic culture. (ESLR:SCW)

50 minutes per day, 5 days a week, 2 semesters
Course Content
- Basic greetings and social conventions, count to 100, classroom objects, days of the week and months, how to ask questions
- Vocabulary to describe people, the verb SER, articles and agreement
- Vocabulary to describe school activities, how to tell time, conjugate AR-verbs
- Vocabulary to describe leisure activities, the verbs IR, DAR, and ESTAR, and contractions
- Vocabulary to describe home and family activities, conjugate ER- and IR-verbs, and the expression HAY
- Vocabulary to describe fall and spring sports, possessive adjectives, the verbs TENER, TENER QUE and IR A, and stem-changing verbs
- Vocabulary associated with airport check-in and boarding, services and procedures with flying, irregular verbs with g in the first-person singular, the verb VENIR, and the present progressive form
- Vocabulary associated with winter sports and weather, the verbs SABER, CONOCER, and DECIR, and demonstrative adjectives
- Vocabulary to describe minor ailments and visits to the doctor, the uses of the verbs SER and ESTAR, the direct and indirect object pronouns: ME, TE, NOS
- Vocabulary associated with summer leisure time and weather, preterite form of AR-verbs and of IR and SER, the direct object pronouns for third person
- Vocabulary to describe cultural activities, preterite form of ER- and IR-verbs, and of VER and DAR, the indirect object pronouns: LE and LES.
Evaluation
Participation in class, weekly speeches and oral tests: 1/3 of the grade
Written assignments: 1/3 of the grade
Written tests and quizzes: 1/3 of the grade
