Dear WIS Family – Parents & Students alike,

The new school is rapidly approaching. Welcome to our new families and welcome back to those who are returning. It has been lonely here without you.

We also welcome some new teachers, Charissa Lam, who’ll teach 3rd Grade; David Swarbrick, our new Mathematics teacher; Emma Kynaston, who’ll teach 4th Grade; Mary-Lyn Dethan, our new Grade 2 teacher; Pak Iwan Widiyanto, our new Teacher’s Assistant; and Stephanie O’Quin, who’ll be teaching Biology. You will have the opportunity to meet all of these over the next few weeks. A reminder to all our first day welcome chapel and class introduction will be Thursday, 9 August, commencing at 7.30am and continuing through to 12.15pm. Normal class programs will commence on Friday, 10 August. This will be the first full day of school.

We also want to welcome all our new students (and some returning ones) and their families. As we start the new school year together I want you to be aware of God’s empowering grace. This promises to be a great year. I want it to be a year where we all come together to build a community of grace that will pull together to continue to make this school great. Grace is not only about the forgiveness we receive through Jesus Christ but also empowers the life we live with him and for him. I would draw your attention to the promises we receive in God’s word: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” – John 10:10b; “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ…. that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people” – Ephesians 1:3 & 18; “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have been filled in him, who is the head of all rule and authority” – Colossians 2: 9-10; and “His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” – 2 Peter 1: 3-4 . Let’s not settle into living just as we have been but let’s make this year where we grow, spiritually, academically and in influence in our community and ministry. There are some of the opportunities and events that are coming up soon and I wanted to make you aware of them.

Every year during this fasting month we support the service project class in holding a pasar murah for some of the residents living around the school. It has been decided this year that we do don’t have time to gather all the necessary food for the event and instead we will hold a medical outreach into the community around Wednesday, August 29. We will train students in the service project class in basic health screening skills and will be asking different members of our community to assist us. Thank you once again for your help in being able to make this event a success and enabling WIS to bless the community around us.

Note that Friday, August 17th is National Independence Day and Monday, August 20th is Idul Fitri. These are national holidays and there will be no school on these days.

The Student Leadership camp will be held Friday, August 24th and Saturday, August 25th.

Also the High School will be having a worship night on September 7th. This should be a great time opportunity for the students to worship together and build unity before the Lord.

There will be other things starting up over the next few weeks such as varsity Football team try outs, World Changers club and MFC for the elementary. Look out for other announcements about these things and look at the calendar for different events going on at the school.

We at the Wesley ‘believe that every child is a unique creation of God and the best education will address the whole child: Spirit, mind, social relations, identity, emotions and physical body.’ This is a piece from our school’s philosophy of education and over the coming months I hope to write a little about each of these aspects as we explore this philosophy together.

God bless you,

Richard Gallagher
